Students are working on shared writing experiences, writing stories and writing cards. Kindergarteners are star writers! Please help this process when your child is writing at home by encouraging them to sound out words instead of spelling the words for them. They need this confidence in order to let their writing flow. If they believe everything has to be spelled correctly it inhibits the process. I tell them if they only get down one of the sounds in the word it is OK. If they guess the sound incorrectly I do not correct them because then they won't believe that it doesn't have to be perfect. One exception to this is the "heart" words which are mostly tricky words. We DO learn how to spell these words and they are on the word wall in the classroom for students to use in their writing. Please check out the "inventive spelling" page under the "more" tab of this website for more information on this topic and let me know if you have questions.
